At Secret Bay, we have always believed that the breathtaking beauty of Dominica should be accessible to all. This commitment led us to partner with Open Doors Organization (ODO), a renowned non-profit dedicated to improving access for people with disabilities in travel and tourism.
The Open Doors Journey
In April 2024, we had the privilege of hosting ODO’s team for a comprehensive accessibility assessment and staff training, marking a significant milestone in our journey towards inclusive luxury. Upon experiencing Secret Bay, the ODO team conducted a thorough evaluation of our property, identifying both our strengths and areas for improvement.
Through comprehensive upgrades and customised offerings, Secret Bay is committed to redefining accessible luxury on the Nature Island. Here’s how.
Arrival
Upon arrival in Dominica, the ODO team was greeted by Secret Bay’s airport shuttle service. While they praised the service overall, they offered constructive feedback to enhance accessibility for power wheelchair users. The team then journeyed to Secret Bay’s Mouben Welcome House, the gateway to our amenities. From Mouben, guests can readily explore Bwa Denn (details below), the lap pool and bar and our pristine beach by wheelchair-accessible ramps and lift. For added convenience, we offer a fleet of electric golf carts, using slide boards for self-transfers or assisted transfers, to shuttle guests between their villas and the resort’s various amenities. Mouben also provided seamless access to the funicular, the longest in the Caribbean. Showcasing our commitment to inclusive luxury, this engineering marvel features a wheelchair accessible boarding area and effortlessly transports guests to the spectacular Clifftop and Summit enclaves, where three of our newly-designed fully accessible villas (details below) are located.
Accessible Accommodations
Our new two-bedroom accessible villas garnered high praise from the ODO team for providing seamless accessibility for those using wheelchairs or experiencing mobility challenges. These spacious retreats feature:
- Ramps from the driveway to the villa deck
- A fully accessible layout with an elevator between villa floors
- Accessible bathrooms with grab bars, padded shower benches and handheld showerheads
- Private infinity pools with stairs, handrails, and poolside grab bars
The ODO consultants provided additional suggestions to enhance these villas further for guests with mobility challenges, such as adjusting furniture placement and ensuring food items are placed on lower refrigerator shelves for easy reach.
Getting Around Secret Bay
Mobility around the resort was a key focus of the ODO assessment. They commended our:
- Accessible pathways to the restaurant, bar, lap pool, and beach areas
- Golf cart transportation system
- Wheelchair-accessible funicular
The team also offered valuable advice on improving our beach accessibility, suggesting the addition of beach mats and specialized beach wheelchairs.
Amenities and Activities
The recently opened Bwa Denn Kitchen and Gallery was designed with accessibility in mind. The ODO team reviewed our plans, ensuring that this multi-level space is fully accessible with access ramps, elevators and appropriate restroom facilities.
While some of Dominica’s famous hiking trails may pose challenges for wheelchair users, the ODO team helped us identify several exciting accessible excursions. These include visits to Fort Young, Fresh Water Lake, and scenic drives showcasing Dominica’s natural beauty.
Staff Training: The Heart of Accessibility
Perhaps the most impactful aspect of ODO’s visit was the comprehensive training provided to our staff. This session covered:
- Disability awareness and etiquette
- Proper language and communication techniques
- Understanding the needs of older travelers and those with multiple disabilities
- Practical tips for assisting guests with various accessibility requirements
This training has empowered our team to provide even more personalized and thoughtful service to all our guests.

Our collaboration with Open Doors Organization has been transformative. Their expertise has not only helped us enhance our physical accessibility but has also deepened our understanding of inclusive hospitality.
